Vocabulary Retention: Instructional Routines for Increasing Word Play Date: 1/26/2022 

Teachers experience three Micro-Routines to help students gain the 17 interactions they need with new words. They also receive a guide to vocabulary retention with menus of tools and possibilities, over a three week cycle.

Middle school and US History teachers experienced various routines and activities for teaching MARCH the graphic novels. Teachers unpacked a possible unit to explore for future adaptation.

Yearly, we reimagine our approach to test prep to ensure that we include elements of joy, connectivity and curiosity. These efforts help students to improve learning retention and to reduce anxieties around test taking.

Developing Learner Independence

Moving Towards Learner Independence Date: 3/14/2022 

Teachers experience three Micro-Routines to empower students towards independent habits, ideas and voice. These micro-routines can move students outside of the compliance zone.

May 18, 2017: Teachers used the Annotation routine to unpack the new Thought Bubbles routine, planning its incorporation over the next month with a continued consideration of John Hattie’s data for improving student achievement.

Middle School Math Instructional Routines - Connecting Representations: Part 2 of 2

February 13, 2017: In Part Two of this series, math teachers experienced and learned the Connecting Representations instructional routine: identifying how instructional routines support ambitious teaching, analyzing tasks to use it for specific instructional purposes, and problem solving potential challenges during implementation.

MS Literacy: Writing Across Content Areas - Growing Statements

January 26, 2017: Teachers considered commonly used elements of statement writing, such as ‘fact’, ‘kernel’ and ‘reaction’ in an introduction to Growing Statements, and then debriefed using the Paraphrase routine. Then, they planned an incorporation of the new writing routine over the next month.

Middle School Math Instructional Routines - Contemplate then Calculate: Part 1 of 2

November 8, 2016: In Part One of this series, math teachers considered the purpose, definition and potential of instructional routines. They experienced and learned Contemplate then Calculate: rehearsing its facilitation, analyzing tasks to use it for specific instructional purposes, and problem solving potential challenges during implementation.

November 3, 2016: As an introduction to the new Note-Taking routine (Sort-Connect-Reflect), teachers participated in Silent Graffiti and Silent Carousel routines, and then planned incorporation of the note-taking writing strategy over the next month.

MS Literacy Handbook Workshop - Writing: Part 3 of 3

June 6, 2016: Teachers concluded the literacy workshop series with an introduction to Sentence Cards and Word Bank, presenting their use of a discourse strategy in their classroom and then planning a literacy strategy incorporation for the following school year.
