As some of you may know, New York State adopted newly revised ELA and Math standards in September 2017 after a public process of looking at and revising the NYS Common Core Learning Standards for ELA and Math. Jennifer Kim and Sara Toguchi, instructional specialists on our math team, have reviewed those changes to see how they will impact our curriculum.

It's one of the most common problems of practice teachers face. Students often forget what they have learned in what seems like a very quick amount of time. This is because students tend to remember what they think about and forget what they don’t think about.

As part of a 90 day project here at New Visions for Public Schools to standardize elements of our curriculum, curriculum team members worked together to create a common template for course maps.

We are in the process of designing our curriculum to solve two big problems we see with mathematics curriculum.
The first problem is that teachers, who have limited time to prepare lessons, are often forced to grab resources from Google and Pinterest. This leads to a potentially incoherent experience for children and more work for teachers.
The second problem is that many mathematics curricula are inflexible. One cannot easily substitute one lesson for another nor is it particularly straight-forward to insert lessons, selected in response to observed student need, into the middle of a sequence of lessons.

As you may have noticed, we have a new website! We’ve been working on this website in different stages since last April. It has been a team effort with Isaac Learner, our Digital Communications Officer leading the project and Russell West in charge of supervising content entry.
