Collaborative planning assumes common materials. To better support the transition to Common Core mathematics, New Visions designed a common sequence of unit plans leaving day-to-day choices in the hands of school teacher teams. Our work was based on the unit sequence initially designed by the Mathematics Design Collaborative in which several New Visions schools participated.
A critical aspect of successful teaching involves “establishing mathematical goals to focus learning” (NCTM, Principles to Actions), but most curricula offer teachers neither support nor models for accomplishing this. This set of unit plans provides teachers with examples of carefully selected and sequenced learning targets for their students, which support adaptable response to evidence of student learning and focus day-to-day planning on core mathematical goals.
