Counting Circles

Resource:
Counting Circles

Find the number of circles - supporting looking at patterns.

Counting Squares

Resource:
Counting Squares

Find the number of squares - supporting looking at patterns.

Discrete versus Continuous

Resource:
Discrete versus Continuous

Students will make connections between examples of linear and exponential verbal situations and graphs using discrete and continuous properties.

All Resources From:
Domain and range activity

Resource:
Domain and range activity

This activity is designed to get students talking about graphs using positions on the graphs and then the teacher introduces domain and range after.

Driving Down the Highway

Resource:
Driving Down the Highway

The goals of this activity are:

  1. Support students in thinking like mathematicians by looking for and making use of structure (MP7) in their problem solving.
  2. Support students in having mathematical conversations with each other. (MP3)

End of Unit Assessment (Algebra I, Unit 1)

After this unit, how prepared are your students for the end-of-course Regents examination?  The end of unit assessment is designed to surface how students understand the mathematics in the unit.  It includes spiralled multiple choice and constructed response questions, comparable to those on the end-of-course Regents examination.  A rich task, that allows for multiple entry points and authentic assessment of student learning, may be available for some units and can be included as part of the end of unit assessment.  All elements of the end of unit assessment are aligned to the NYS Mathematics Learning Standards and PARCC Model Frameworks prioritization.

Features of Functions

Resource:
Features of Functions

This unit from the Mathematics Vision Project has activities which could be used to highlight certain features of functions. One needs to be careful about prior knowledge when using these activities as their units are sequenced differently than ours.

Find the Vertex of a Parabola

Resource:
Find the Vertex of a Parabola

Supports using rate of change to find the vertex of a parabola

Function or Not?

Resource:
Function or Not?

Use the verbal structure of a set of definitions of a function/non-function and match these definitions to a set of visuals of different types.

Functions and Situations (Algebra I)

Resource:
Functions and Situations (Algebra I)

A Classroom Challenge (aka formative assessment lesson) is a classroom-ready lesson that supports formative assessment. The lesson’s approach first allows students to demonstrate their prior understandings and abilities in employing the mathematical practices, and then involves students in resolving their own difficulties and misconceptions through structured discussion.

Graph game

This activity lets students move around a stick person and try and match graphs of various kinds. It requires students to have access to computers (tablets will not work).

Graphing Stories

Resource:
Graphing Stories

This is a collection of resources, particularly useful for Algebra I - Unit 1, that support students in constructing graphs based on situations.
