TYWLS Harlem Science teacher Melina Melendez wanted to approach new vocabulary in her class with a more student-centered activity. In the past, she found that providing the definition or having students look up the definition in a dictionary did not target long-term memory.
Melina used the Word Hunt routine push her students to use their prior knowledge and inferencing skills to figure out the meaning of a word. Check out Melina's lesson slides below as well as a video that shows her students using informed guesses to determine the meaning of meiosis.
