Unit-Based Professional Development Workshops

Participation in the New Visions Science Curriculum professional development workshops (open to teachers from New Visions affiliated schools) provides the opportunity for teachers to be a part of a diverse community of practice, collaborating with their peers from across the city during eight full-day professional development sessions. These sessions provide a forum for teachers to learn together to make instructional decisions about using the New Visions Science Curriculum with their students. Key components of all workshops include:

  • Unit-based sessions - Each meeting is based on an upcoming unit; teachers experience units as learners in order to anticipate student misconceptions and challenges and make decisions about modifying resources. Since participating teachers stay close to a common scope and sequence, sessions are timely and grounded in content.
  • Learning about and reflecting on routines - Since each unit and each 5E plan follows a similar structure, teachers can reflect on their practice and learn ways to improve routines that recur in subsequent units.
  • Experiential learning - During each unit-based PD, participants can expect to experience key activities from the curriculum including laboratories, group learning routines, performance tasks, and literacy strategies. 
  • Learning from experts in the field - In many sessions, participants will meet with scientists, from the organization Know Science, to learn about current developments that relate to upcoming science units.
  • Differentiated support - In order to support different levels of experience with the New Visions Science Curriculum, each session will include targeted breakout sessions.

Teacher Advisory Board

The New Visions Science Curriculum supports teachers with several years’ experience who are interested in developing leadership in the areas of curriculum development and instructional leadership. The science teacher advisory board meets once a month. Science teacher leaders collaboratively develop curriculum resources, lead professional development sessions, present their ideas at local and national conferences, and work with teachers and administrators at their schools to promote best practices in science education. The teacher advisory board ensures that our curricular materials are classroom tested and support diverse learning needs.
