Register for Summer 2018 PD
Opportunities for professional learning in science this summer are now open for registration!
July 2-3 - Leading a Science Department Using the New Visions Curriculum
THIS SESSION IS FULL! Please email Dora Kastel (firstname.lastname@example.org) with questions.
Leaders will learn about facilitating learning in science teams through the current transition to the New York State Science Learning Standards.
July 9-10 - NYS Science Learning Standards and Storyline Development: Collaborate to teach a newly-designed unit
Earth Science and Living Environment teacher leaders and aspiring teacher leaders will learn about one newly-created unit for each content area, in order to prepare for field testing NGSS/NYSSLS-aligned curriculum in Fall 2018. Note: This workshop is for teachers who already have experience with the New Visions science curriculum.
July 11-13 - NYS Science Learning Standards and Storyline Development: Collaborative curriculum design
Earth Science and Living Environment teacher leaders and aspiring teacher leaders will collaborate on NGSS/NYSSLS storyline development. Note: July 9-10 is a pre-requisite for these dates.
July 23-25 - Models- Based Physics
New Visions is launching a collaboration with STEMteachersNYC, a long-standing grassroots community of science teachers, to develop open-source physics instructional materials that are grounded in a models-based approach. The three-day workshop this summer will be co-facilitated by Kelly O'Shea and Mark Schober of STEMteachersNYC, and Kiran Purohit and Libby Chatham of New Visions.
In the workshop, participants will experience activities from two units in the Physics course as learners, and through these immersive experiences develop an understanding of a common instructional approach that emphasizes the new standards (NGSS/NYSSLS), especially the Science and Engineering Practice of modeling. Note that we do NOT yet have a complete set of instructional materials for Physics; this workshop will be a chance for teachers to learn together about two units, and to contribute to decisions about development of physics curriculum at New Visions. This workshop is especially suitable for physics teachers interested in building a community focused on tools for student sense-making and access to physics for all students.
August 20-21 - Summer Workshop for Chemistry
Teachers will learn about teaching a student-centered, investigations-driven Chemistry course that aligns to Regents expectations.
August 21-22 - Summer Institute for Living Environment
August 23-24 - Summer Institute for Earth Science
Teachers new to the New Visions science curriculum will learn how to implement the new NYS Science Learning Standards through the full-course materials for Earth Science and Living Environment.
August 23 - Summer Institute for Earth Science and Living Environment (Returning Teachers)
Returning teachers will have an opportunity to explore additional dimensions of the new standards, in preparation for teaching the curriculum in 2018-19.
