CHAH ENL teacher Leah Werner-Evans wanted a way for her students to practice close reading in a remote setting. Leah created a scaffold for her students to close read and compare various primary sources about civilian rights during war. Leah adapted the Annotation instructional routine with a two-column shared google doc for her students to read and annotate in a live session.
Watch Leah read aloud 'chunks' of text and then prompt her students to annotate at the same time with a given purpose. Using this shared google doc routine, Leah's students could access their annotations afterwards to complete the next steps of the task, which was a Venn diagram comparison that led to a short essay on civilian rights during wartime.
