TYWLS Harlem Social Studies teacher Hannah Givertz normally facilitates a class debate on government regulation this time of year. Despite the limitations of remote learning, Hannah decided to go forward with the debate so students could show their understanding and opinion on the role of government during the turn of the century. Hannah simplified the traditional debate format to include an affirmative student presentation, then a negative presentation, followed by peer questions.

Check out some of the class debate highlights below and consider using debate as a way to increase student engagement and to give your students voice in a safe forum.
