TYWLS Bronx Social Studies teacher Michelle Nguyen was looking for a more engaging and student-led approach to review speech writing. The end of unit summative task is a 1-2 minute speech and Michelle provided a short technical writing text for them to read. To ensure students unpack the guiding ideas of the text and filter down what was most useful information for them, students used Extract, our latest pre-writing routine. Students recall facts and ideas from the text then use 2 layers of "remembering" to decide what is most important to include before writing.
