Zaretta Hammond has been inspiring us to think about "word wealth" and its role in equity. Even the students we surveyed believe learning new words would help them in the future with college and job interviews. As teachers, we already know the impact that vocabulary development can have in reading and writing. So why not focus on supporting students to create a vocabulary retention system that works for them both in and outside of class? The science tells us that the brain needs to be exposed to a new word 17 times in order to reach long-term memory. Think about all the little ways you can help your students reach 17 exposures. Below you will find a link to our Vocabulary Retention Guide to help you insert more word wealth opportunities into your weekly planning.
