Jenni Mayberry and Leah Werner-Evans, teachers at Community Health Academy of the Heights (CHAH), created a rubric to begin the school year with measurable literacy aims around discourse. This rubric and checklist will allow students to regularly assess themselves and be observed by their teachers, using Paraphrase, Silent Collaboration and Think Pair Share on a regular basis.
CHAH teachers sorted learning behaviors and content-based sub-skills into observable categories, such as Physical Behavior, Inferences, Making Connections, PtP teaching and Literacy Routine Mastery. Then, they used the same categories to design checklists for daily tallying of individual student performance. Stay tuned for a blog entry and video updates on their progress!
