To target engagement and encourage reading, TYWLS Bronx 6th grade ELA teachers Brianna Brown and Jane O'Connor used John Lewis' graphic novel, MARCH, to introduce students to activism. Brianna and Jane infused a combination of primary sources from Lewis' early years into his life's work of social justice as a part of reading through his powerful story.

The unit culminated in a timeline project where students chose 5 events they thought most impacted Lewis' journey into activism. The timeline project was also an assessment of their basic mastery of Google Slides.

Check out the students discussing their experience reading the book as well as a few samples of their timeline projects.
