TYWLS Bronx co-teachers Brianna Brown and Jane O'Connor wanted students to analyze the famous Norman Rockwell painting of Ruby Bridges as a part of their graphic novel unit on MARCH, by John Lewis. Brianna and Jane had noticed their students were making general observations about an image, but not using specific details in their analysis.
They used our adaptation of Rhonda Blondie's 'Zoom In Inquiry' to get their 6th graders to narrow in on different parts of an image. The Zoom In & Out instructional routine allows students time and space to take notes on different aspect of an image in google docs.
