Geographical Representations (Topographic/Contour Maps) 5E Instructional Model Plan

Resource:
Geographical Representations (Topographic/Contour Maps) 5E Instructional Model Plan

Students learn about topographic maps, including contour maps, by collecting data from a 3D model of a landform to create a contour map. Then the teacher provides direct instruction on contour map features, creating profiles, and calculating gradient, and students create profiles and calculate gradients for the contour map they created during the explore phase. Finally, students match typical geographical features to representations on a contour map and extend their thinking by identifying erosional processes on a contour map.

All Resources From:
Insolation and Seasons Lab

Resource:
Insolation and Seasons Lab

Students learn about differences in solar insolation across the Earth by collecting and graphing data from an angle of insolation lab.

All Resources From:
Modeling Earth's Interior Processes Lab

Resource:
Modeling Earth's Interior Processes Lab

Students learn about the driving force behind plate motion by making observations from models of Earth's interior and its processes.

Modeling Nuclear Decay

Resource:
Modeling Nuclear Decay

In this actitivity, students learn about radioactive dating by modeling radioactive and decayed carbon atoms with the heads and tails side of pennies.

All Resources From:
Phases of the Moon 5E Instructional Model Plan

Resource:
Phases of the Moon 5E Instructional Model Plan

Students learn about why we see different phases of the moon by making observations of a 3-D Moon phase model and a moon phase simulator. Students then learn about the relationship between moon phases and tides by graphing daily tides and associating them with the phases of the moon. Finally, students extend their thinking by using their understanding of relative perspective to explain how solar and lunar eclipses happen.

All Resources From:
Unit 3 Mineral Identification and Explaining Mineral Properties Lab

Resource:
Unit 3 Mineral Identification and Explaining Mineral Properties Lab

Students sort and classify minerals, then learn concepts that allow them to explain why each type of mineral has its own set of unique properties.

All Resources From:
Unit 3 Patterns of Stream Erosion and Deposition Lab (Less Scaffolded)

Resource:
Unit 3 Patterns of Stream Erosion and Deposition Lab (Less Scaffolded)

Students will explore the processes associated with stream erosion by observing an actual small-scale erosional-depositional system.

All Resources From:
Unit 3 Patterns of Stream Erosion and Deposition Lab (More Scaffolded)

Resource:
Unit 3 Patterns of Stream Erosion and Deposition Lab (More Scaffolded)

Students will explore the processes associated with stream erosion by observing an actual small-scale erosional-depositional system.

All Resources From:
Unit 3 Weathering and Erosion Modeling Stations

Living Environment and Earth Science Archive
ES Unit 3: ES: Landscapes and Surface Processes
Resource:
Unit 3 Weathering and Erosion Modeling Stations

Students make predictions and learn about different forms of weathering and erosion through a series of models.

All Resources From:
Unit 4 Modeling Stratigraphic Columns Lab

Living Environment and Earth Science Archive
ES Unit 4: ES: Geologic History and Evolution of Life
Resource:
Unit 4 Modeling Stratigraphic Columns Lab

Students model formation of sedimentary rock layers using various types of sediment. Students then model deformation of rock layers using clay.

All Resources From:
What is Density? Lab

Resource:
What is Density? Lab

Students learn about the concept of density by carrying out a density lab.
