Vocabulary Development Protocol

This instructional strategy is structured to engage students in a process of understanding and agreeing on geometric terms that will be used throughout the year. Students explore and make sense of a concept before being told the definition. At least a couple of lessons in Unit 1 should emphasize the need for precise definitions that are agreed upon because of the consequences of using different definitions.
The math practices explicitly articulate the language of geometric reasoning, including making conjectures, using inductive reasoning, and attending to precision to critique the reasoning of others in the service of moving collective understanding forward. When students have the opportunity to explore and discover an understanding of concepts, they are better able to remember them.
