Developing a sense of scale

Resource:
Developing a sense of scale

Focus on proportions and proportional relationships between similar figures.

All Resources From:
Dilate Triangles

Resource:
Dilate Triangles

Students will dilate triangles using a compass.  Students will analyze the relationship between angle measures and segment/side lengths of pre-images and images.

All Resources From:
Dilating a cartoon character

Resource:
Dilating a cartoon character

Students will use a comass to dilate an image.  Then students will analyze the properties of a dilation based on their images.

All Resources From:
Dilations with a rubber band

Resource:
Dilations with a rubber band

Students will perform a dilation of an image using rubber bands.

FAL: Drawing to scale: A garden

Resource:
FAL: Drawing to scale: A garden

An FAL that focuses on scale factor and similar figures.

Finding Triangle Coordinates

Resource:
Finding Triangle Coordinates

The purpose of this task is to use similar triangles in order to study the coordinates of points which divide a line segment in a given ratio. These coordinates can be calculated directly but the method employed here not only allows us to find the coordinates of the desired points but also to construct them (with straightedge and compass).

All Resources From:
GeoGebra Rubber Band Dilation Simulation

Resource:
GeoGebra Rubber Band Dilation Simulation

GeoGebra simulation that shows how using a "knotted rubber band" can dilate a triangle.

All Resources From:
GeoGebra Slider SSS Similar Triangles

Resource:
GeoGebra Slider SSS Similar Triangles

Slider that shows the 3 sides of the smaller triangle in proportion to the 3 sides of the larger triangle.  Triangles have the center of dilation as the vertex of 1 angle.

All Resources From:
GeoGebra slider that shows dilated triangles with varying scale factors

Resource:
GeoGebra slider that shows dilated triangles with varying scale factors

Slider that shows an original triangle and the dilated similar triangle.  The slider represents the scale factor.

All Resources From:
GeoGebra Slider Visualizing a Dilation

Resource:
GeoGebra Slider Visualizing a Dilation

GeoGebra slider that shows a triangle dilation changing as the scale factor changes.

All Resources From:
Scaling a Triangle in the Coordinate Plane

Resource:
Scaling a Triangle in the Coordinate Plane

The goal of this task is to apply dilations to a triangle in the coordinate plane.

All Resources From:
Transforming Polygons

Resource:
Transforming Polygons

Transform polygons and describe the relationship between a pre-image and its image under a transformation on the coordinate plane.
