This Core Resource supports students in investigating, primarily using rate of change, how linear functions are different than exponential functions.

Students compare arithmetic and geometric sequences and connect these two linear and exponential functions respectively. Students then analyze situations to determine what function type, linear or exponential, best models the situation.  

What is not yet covered in this resource is representing piecewise, step, or absolute functions as graphs, calculating average rate of change, and writing explicit and recursive descriptions of functions.

The primary focus of this Core resource is on how linear and exponential functions can be transformed and how those transformations are represented in graphs, tables, and function rules.

A Formative Assessment Lesson (also known as a Classroom Challenge) is a carefully designed lesson that both supports teachers in understanding how students make sense of the unit's mathematics and offers students opportunities to revisit and deepen their understanding of that mathematics.

This folder has a cover pages and six extended, scaffolded problems that are designed for an end-of-year trip to Six Flags Great America. It covers linear and quadratic functions and transformations. The problems refer specifically to the rides and experiences that students will have while at the park, while at the same time most of the problems can be finished at home or on the bus. Each problem has a rubric for standard-based scoring of problems. Feel free to download and change at will. Please don't change the originals.
